A Twenty-20 format was searched in United Kingdom, a country that also gave a birth to the game of cricket. Twnety-20 is a format of game of cricket played between two countries (teams basically) and it is played of twenty overs. Initially, it was played at the county level, but as the time elapsed, this format of the game became the most favorite in world and ICC (International Cricket Council) decided to organize a world cup of twenty-20 format cricket among cricket playing nations. After twenty-20 cricket became famous in the counties of United Kingdom, ICC decided to introduce this format in the world cricket and started international twenty-20 event when Australia took on New Zealand on 17th February, 2005 in an only twney-20 game of that series. The stadium was full with the crowd and because of its short format and glamour, more and more people started to come in to watch this format of cricket match.

 

Finally, first world cup of this cricketing format held in 2007 which was hosted by South Africa. The first ever world cup kicked off with the twenty-20 cricket match between hosts South Africa and West Indies when West Indian team’s captain Chris Gayle scored a first century (score of hundred runs) of twenty-20 format and the eventually match was won by South Africa. Eventually, the first ever ICC world twenty-20 was won by India when they beat their rivals Pakistan in heart-thumping final match in the Wanderers stadium of Johannesburg.

 

After 2007, second ICC world twenty-20 took place in its mother country England and it promised the best of the action in the game of cricket. Just like 2007, more and more records were set and broke. Eventually, the runners-up of 2007 ICC world twenty-20 Pakistan was winner of this event under the captaincy of their star player Shahid Afridi.

 

Inspired from this, world’s richest cricketing board BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) decided to start a domestic twenty-20 tournament in 2008 and invited international players to play in it. IPL has enjoyed the extreme fame in cricket world and over the cricket news as well. This domestic tournament is known as Indian Premier League (or IPL) and it became a real success in its first edition of 2008 that more and more players were attracted to the event.
